EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 13 Northwestern faces a pair of ranked opponents this week as it travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face No. 10 Wake Forest on Thursday and No. 20 James Madison on Sunday.
The Wildcats (3-2) moved up one spot in this week's NFHCA poll from its preseason ranking. NU is looking for its first win over a ranked foe this season after suffering a pair of tight losses to No. 3 Connecticut (3-2 in OT) and No. 15 Louisville (1-0). The loss to the Cardinals on Sunday snapped the team's 16-match home win streak, a mark that matched the school record.
Sophomore Isabel Flens leads the Northwestern attack with six goals through five games. The six goals are tied for the Big Ten lead with Indiana's Audra Heilman and rank tied for fourth in the nation. Dominique Masters has contributed four goals while Lisa McCarthy and Charlotte Martin are tied for the team lead with five assists apiece.
Scheduling Changes
Northwestern has announced changes to the team's start times for both of its matches in Evanston next weekend. Saturday's matchup vs. Maryland now will begin at 11 a.m. while Sunday's contest against Ball State is now slated to start at 11:30 a.m.
Scouting Wake Forest
The Demon Deacons (3-1) posted a pair of wins last week, defeating No. 9 Old Dominion 5-4 in overtime before topping Davidson 3-0. Wake Forest is 1-1 against Big Ten opponents already this season, falling 4-1 to Iowa before defeating Michigan 3-2 in overtime. Senior Anna Kozniuk, a 2013 All-American, leads the team with four goals. The Demon Deacons are coached by Northwestern Hall-of-Famer Jennifer Averill. Wake Forest leads the all-time series with NU 4-2, though the last meeting between the teams was the Chelsea Armstrong Show as she posted four goals in a 5-2 win for the 'Cats Sept. 11, 2012 in Winston-Salem.
Scouting James Madison
The Dukes are off to a 3-0 start this season and take on Appalachian State in Boone, N.C., on Friday prior to Sunday's match with Northwestern. James Madison's No. 20 national ranking is its first since Sept. 21, 2010. The squad defeated Longwood 4-2 last week before defeating Richmond 2-1 in double overtime. Junior back Loes Stijntjes was named the CAA Player of the Week after posting two goals and an assist against Longwood before tallying the game-winning goal vs. Richmond. Stijntjes leads the team with four goals. James Madison leads the series with Northwestern 3-2-1 though the schools haven't met since the 'Cats posted a 2-1 overtime win in Kent, Ohio, Aug. 29, 2004.
