EVANSTON, Ill. -- Since arriving back on campus, April Likhite's 2014 Wildcats squad has been working hard to prepare for the start of their competitive season, which gets underway at the season-opening NIU Night Race on Friday evening.
Hosted by Northern Illinois in DeKalb, the unique primetime event will take place under the lights of the NIU Outdoor Sports Complex -- located just north of the NIU Convocation Center -- on a two-mile course.
Complete results of the event will be posted on NUsports.com and on NIUHuskies.com following the meet.
Northwestern ranks ninth in the USTFCCCA preseason Midwest Regional poll, standing as the third Big Ten team in the rankings. Likhite is returning five of the seven runners that competed for the Wildcats at last season's NCAA Regional Championships, all five of whom were merely freshmen or sophomores at the time. Then-freshmen Andrea Ostenso and Elena Miller were NU's second and third-best finishers at the meet, and this year will be joined by a collection of six Northwestern newcomers looking to improve the Wildcats' league and regional standings.
After Friday's season-opener, the Wildcats will be right back in action seven days later at the Badger Season-Opener, which annually features many of the top teams in the Midwest.
