EVANSTON, Ill. -- There will be a few new faces on the Northwestern women's basketball team for the 2014-15 season with a talented group of incoming freshmen joining the squad. A number of the incoming freshmen are already in Evanston this summer, working out with the returning Wildcats.
With the new faces, it's time to get to know the new freshmen that will be on the Welsh-Ryan Arena court next year. Up next is Maya Jonas, a 6-2 guard from Whitefish Bay, Wis. Maya was a four-time All-North Shore Conference honoree while leading Whitefish Bay High School in scoring and rebounding all four years. As a senior, she led the Blue Dukes and the entire conference in scoring (14.7), rebounding (10.5), assists (3.8) and blocks (3.3) and was named the 2014 North Shore Conference Player of the Year.
Read on to get to know Maya!:
Why did you choose Northwestern?
When I visited Northwestern, I fell in love with the combination of academics and athletics. I also really liked the small town feel despite it being a Big Ten school and the proximity to home.
Anticipated major?
Most likely cognitive science (premed)
How do you spend your time when you aren't in the gym?
Homework... but if not that then usually reading, sleeping, or eating
Who's you favorite professional athlete and why?
Kate Hansen (Olympic luge), we both worship Beyonce and her dance moves are magical (plus she favorited my tweet all the way from Sochi so we're essentially best friends)
Favorite sports and why?
Hockey! There's never a dull moment and the fact that they can remain upright while on skates and getting blindsided by an opponent fascinates me (probably because I have trouble walking without falling)
What's something about you that few people know or would be surprised to learn?
I collect vinyl records and my favorite album is probably The Joshua Tree by U2, but I also enjoy some Sinatra from time to time.
What's the last movie you saw and how was it?
Can't Buy Me Love, 80s movies are my passion so I loved it and Patrick Dempsey is adorable
One song that will always make you get up and dance?
"Crazy in Love" by Beyonce
What has been your favorite thing about Northwestern so far?
All the people (especially the team)
What's something funny that has happened to you recently?
Playing Cards Against Humanity with the team
What's a song that describes your personality?
"Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin
What motivates you to keep practicing?
The love of the game
Finish the sentence: Never have I ever...
Had a type of sushi I didn't like
Favorite TV show growing up?
The Brady Bunch
How do you get pumped before a game?
I usually listen to Pandora, either Disney or 80's hits
What class you are looking forward to taking?
Organic chemistry
Favorite spot on Northwestern's campus so far?
Market Fresh Books
What are you most excited about for this coming season?
Getting to see all the different gyms we play in
