Boston College Stops Northwestern, 4-3

3/9/2014 12:00:00 AM | Softball

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Northwestern put the first two runs of the game on the board early Sunday morning at the USF Under Armour Showcase, but Boston College battled back for a big inning in the fourth to defeat the Wildcats, 4-3.

Northwestern falls to 15-5 overall on the season with its loss, 4-1 at the UA Showcase. Boston College now is 14-7 on the year, 5-0 at the tournament.

Northwestern found the scoreboard right away in the top of the first when Emily Allard (Antioch, Calif./Deer Valley) singled to lead off the game, moved to second on a Mari Majam (Pine Valley, Calif./Mountain Empire) sacrifice and then came all the way home when Marisa Bast (Orange, Calif./Villa Park) singled. The RBI for Bast was her eighth of the weekend.

Allard again was the catalyst for a Wildcats run in the third. With one out she singled, then stole second and came home on a Majam single to make NU's lead 2-0. Allard's second run in this game gave her eight for the weekend, sending her past Garland Cooper (2004-07) and into a tie with Nicole Pauly (2007-10) for second place all-time at NU with 149 career runs scored.

Boston College battled back in the bottom of the fourth with an inning one would normally see from Northwestern. The Eagles scored four in the frame and threatened for more before reliever Kristen Wood (Trevor, Wis./Wilmot Union) was able to strand two in scoring position with three-straight outs to limit NU's deficit to 4-2 after four.

Northwestern got leadoff base hits from Allard and Majam again in the sixth inning before Boston College's ace Nicole D'Argento again was able to escape the frame.

Wood struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth to keep the NU deficit at two runs, then Andrea Filler (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run against her former team to make it a 4-3 game, but Northwestern had no further runs left in the tank.

Albanese (3-2) allowed four runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout in 3+ innings of work in the start. Wood tossed 3.0 innings of relief and was charged with no runs while giving up one hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

At the plate Allard and Majam combined to go 5-for-5 with a sacrifice. Allard was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Majam finished 2-for-2 with an RBI. Filler also finished with two base hits for NU.

Northwestern now is off for winter quarter finals before returning to action March 21-23 in a home Big Ten series against Wisconsin.
