EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern, in its lone exhibition game, defeated the UW-Parkside Rangers at Welsh Ryan Arena Sunday afternoon by a score of 78-47. Thirteen Wildcats were able to see the floor and 11 of them found the scoring column in the 31-point triumph.

Preseason All-Big Ten honoree Nia Coffey led Northwestern with a double-double behind a game-high 14 points and 11 rebounds in only 18 minutes of action. Junior Lauren Douglas and senior Alex Cohen also both scored in double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The 'Cats shared the ball well all afternoon, collecting 21 assists on 28 field goals. Karly Roser, Ashley Deary and Douglas all chipped in with four helpers apiece.

The 'Cats and Rangers went toe-to-toe in the first half exchanging points until a 10-0 run by Northwestern grabbed them the lead for good. UW-Parkside made an effort to chip away at the gap, but were no match for the Wildcats who shot 48.1 percent from the field in the first half, while holding the Rangers to only 28 percent. The hot shooting and stifling defense, combined with 14 points from the free-throw line alone brought the Wildcats into halftime with a 42-23 lead.

Cohen paced the Wildcats with nine points in 14 first-half minutes, while Coffey chipped in with eight points and three assists to add to the team's 19-point lead. Freshman guard Lydia Rohde added five points to the mix in what was her first taste of collegiate action.

Chicago's Big Ten Team carried the momentum into the second half. Northwestern kept everyone involved and eventually opened up its largest lead of the afternoon at 34 points after another newcomer, Alexis Glasgow buried a three-pointer from the right in front of the Wildcats' bench to give NU a 72-38 advantage with 4:56 remaining in the game.

Douglas scored nine of her 11 points in the second half. Junior Christen Johnson also helped out in the final period with four points, four rebounds and an assist.

The 'Cats did turn the ball over 12 times Sunday, but they held the Rangers to only three points off those miscues. On the flip side, the Wildcats cashed in with 29 points off of 19 UW-Parkside turnovers. Northwestern outscored the opposition in the paint, 40-24, and on the fast break, 20-0.

The Wildcats open the regular season on the road, but they won't travel very far. Northwestern will visit nearby Chicago State on Friday, November 14 for 7:05 p.m. game. The 'Cats lead the all-time series against the Cougars, 5-2, including last season's 64-33 triumph at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Christen Inman led the way with 18 points in that game, while Coffey registered her first collegiate double-double behind 17 points and 14 rebounds.

NU will play its first home one week from today on Sunday, Nov. 16 against Hampton University. That contest will tip off at 2 p.m.
