The Matchup
Remarkably, Sunday marks only the third all-time dual meeting between Northwestern and one of the East Coast's perennially strong wrestling programs. The last time NU and Lehigh met in a dual setting was Nov. 26, 1999, when the Mountain Hawks defeated the 'Cats 23-16 and current Northwestern head coach Drew Pariano was the Wildcats starter at 157 pounds. The only other previous matchup was a 21-18 Lehigh victory on Jan. 9, 1992.
Lehigh is 4-1 on the year with wins over Hofstra, Columbia and 11th-ranked Pittsburgh and its only loss coming at the hands of four-time defending NCAA champion Penn State. The Mountain Hawks picked up an impressive 24-15 win at Illinois on Saturday, their first win against the Illini since 1934.
Northwestern Controls Action at Keystone Classic
Northwestern placed three wrestlers in the finals and walked out of the Palestra with two individual champions -- Jason Tsirtsis at 149 pounds and Alex Polizzi at 197 pounds -- as well as the team title at Sunday's Keystone Classic tournament hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. Pierce Harger also reached the finals at 165 pounds, while No. 18 Jameson Oster and Mitch Sliga wrestled their way to third place at 141 and 184 pounds, respectively. The Wildcats managed to claim the Keystone Classic team championship for the third time in four years despite wrestling without two of their six ranked wrestlers and with only seven entrants overall.
Plenty of Action Coming to Welsh-Ryan Arena in December
Northwestern's home dual vs. Lehigh on the final day of November is just the start of high-level college wrestling coming to Welsh-Ryan Arena before the first of the year. On Saturday, Dec. 6, Northwestern will host the Windy City Duals, squaring off with Cal Poly, Drexel, Davidson and Princeton beginning at 11 a.m. CT. It's a chance for Wildcats fans to see four duals for the price of one!
From there, wrestling fans across the country will begin looking ahead to the 52nd Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Dec. 29-30 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tickets for one of the sport's great annual tournaments are on sale now, with all-session passes available for as low as $40.
