EVANSTON, Ill. -- With the dawn of the 2014-15 Northwestern women's basketball season only five days away, the Wildcats have selected a trio of team captains to lead them into the new campaign. Senior Karly Roser (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada/Saint Mary's) returns for a second season as a team captain, while juniors Christen Johnson (Powder Springs, Ga,/The Lovett School) and Maggie Lyon (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) will be first-year captains this year.
Roser has played in 73 games in her first three seasons, averaging 7.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game for the Wildcats. The guard was tabbed honorable mention All-Big Ten (media) in 2013 and she is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. In 2014, Roser was also named as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
The Canada native also has experience playing with her country's national team. She spent the last summer playing in an exhibition series with the Senior Women's National Team and in high school Roser captained the Canadian U17 National Team at the FIBA World Championships in France.
"Karly leads by example, both on and off the court," said Northwestern head coach Joe McKeown. "She is one of the top student-athletes in all of college basketball and her work ethic is second to none. This is a great message to our team and she has the respect of everyone involved in our program."
Johnson has played in 25 games over her first two seasons in Evanston, including a career-high 14 contests in 2013-14. The junior averaged about five minutes per game off the bench and played a career-high eight minutes during Northwestern's WNIT victory over IUPUI last spring. The Georgian was also a 2014 Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
"I'm excited for Christen, as I have told her many times that she is a natural leader," said McKeown. "I think she will embrace her role as a captain and always try to do the right thing. She has the respect of her teammates, the athletic department and Northwestern community."
Lyon, a junior, has played in 58 games with 56 starts though her first two seasons in Evanston. The sharpshooter is averaging 13.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game entering into her third season. Lyon, who hails from nearby Wilmette, Ill., was honored as the 2013 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and has notched All-Big Ten honorable mention recognition in each of her first two campaigns.
"Maggie will be a great captain at Northwestern," remarked McKeown. "She embraces the culture of our university and the athletic department. She also has the competitive edge and the will to win that her teammates and our staff admires so much. I'm really glad she wants the responsibility to be a leader because she is an outstanding role model in our program."
Roser, Johnson, Lyon and the rest of the 'Cats will open the 2014-15 regular season on Friday, Nov. 14 on the road at Chicago State. Tip for the season opener is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Jones Convocation Center. Northwestern begins its home slate on Sunday, Nov. 16 when the Hampton University Lady Pirates invade Welsh-Ryan Arena for a 2 p.m. game.
