EVANSTON, Ill. - On October 23, the Northwestern University Department of Athletics and Recreation hosted its annual Field Day event at the Central Street athletics facilities.
The program--involving a collaboration of 13 varsity teams, over 75 student-athletes and 225 children--is a partnership between the `Cats Give Back Program and the King NU P.R.I.D.E. Programs' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.).
The event allowed NU student-athletes to interact with kids from the Evanston community. Student-athletes manned a total of 11 stations, showcasing the numerous Northwestern varsity sports, as well as teaching children from local youth organizations--YOU, Fleetwood Jourdain, Family Focus and YMCA--the basics of their sports.
The 2014 Field Day was spearheaded by Weinberg senior and Community Outreach Liaison of S.A.A.C., Valerie Nubbe.
"There was a great turn out and it was a lot of fun for the kids and athletes," Nubbe says. "It really shows the spirit of Northwestern Athletic and our commitment to the community."
George Dotson of Family Focus in Evanston, an organization that works with children in low-income communities, says the kids were all smiles during the event and enjoyed the opportunity to interact with local student-athletes.
"This is a great opportunity for the kids to come to NU and interact with the student-athletes," Dotson says. "Both groups had a great time. This Field Day gives the kids the opportunity to see their hometown university in a really positive way. A fun time was had by all, judging by the running and jumping and all the smiles."
