Qualifying Singles Draw

EVANSTON, Ill. - Five members of the Northwestern women's tennis team will compete at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships this weekend in Urbana, Ill. The tournament is hosted by the University of Illinois and runs from Oct. 16-21 at the Atkins Tennis Center.

The winners of each draw in the event earn automatic bids to the ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y.

Alicia Barnett, Lok Sze Leung, Brooke Rischbieth and Jillian Rooney are competing in singles play for the Wildcats, while Barnett and Manon Peri team up on one doubles team and Rischbieth and Leung make up the other.

A Northwestern player has won the singles event in 10 of the past 15 seasons. Kate Turvy is the most recent to do so, winning it in 2012.

Junior Alicia Barnett enters the weekend nationally ranked in singles at No. 123.

The qualifying singles first and second rounds are scheduled to begin Thursday at 9 a.m. Winners of the qualifying rounds will advance to the main draw, which begins on Saturday. Doubles play begins on Friday at 2 p.m.

All NU singles players are placed in the main draw and will begin play on Saturday. The two doubles tandems will start the tournament on Friday afternoon.

48 singles players in the qualifying round will try to play their way into the 48-person main draw, while the doubles draw consists of 48 teams. The Wildcats are joined at the regional championships by players from Big Ten schools Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin.
