Coffey Updates Throughout FIBA U19 World Championships

KLAIPEDA, Lithuania – Northwestern incoming freshman Nia Coffey (Minneapolis, Minn./Hopkins) is bringing a gold medal with her to Evanston as USA Basketball captured a 61-28 victory over France Sunday at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championships.

"Honestly, I can't even put to words what I felt, but it was truly a blessing to be a part of this team," Coffey said after USA's victory in the finals. "To play together to win the gold is actually a dream come true."

It was a dominating defensive performance for USA as France scored just eight in the first period, 12 in the second, six in the third and only two points in the fourth quarter. USA, who defeated France by just six points (69-63) in the second round, wrapped up the tournament a perfect 9-0 en route to the gold medal. USA has now won five consecutive FIBA U19 World Championships.

Coffey was a key contributor off the bench for USA throughout the tournament. She logged 10 minutes in Sunday's final vs. France and had three points, two rebounds and two steals.

The 6-1 forward played alongside a number of current college players at the FIBA World Championships, including student-athletes from the 2013 NCAA Champion Connecticut women's basketball team. Coffey now has her sights set on joining head coach Joe McKeown's Northwestern squad for the 2013-14 season along with fellow freshmen Ashley Deary (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound), Christen Inman (Katy, Texas/Seven Lakes) and Allie Tuttle (Cary, N.C./Panther Creek).
