Northwestern was represented by three individuals on the All-Big Ten women's tennis teams when they were announced Thursday.
Senior Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and junior Belinda Niu (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) were named to the first team while junior Veronica Corning (Beverly, Mass./Pingree School) was selected to the second team.
Turvy's first-team selection is the third of her career. She also earned the honor as a sophomore and a junior. Despite battling injury, Turvy still managed a 10-9 record in dual meet action, including a 6-4 mark in Big Ten play. A mainstay at the top of the Wildcats' lineup, she wrapped up the regular season with wins in seven of her last eight matches and didn't surrender more than six games to her opponent in any of the victories. She is ranked No. 51 in this week's ITA singles rankings and claimed the ITA Midwest Regional singles title in October.
Niu is also a first-team All-Big Ten selection for the third-consecutive season. Competing mainly at the No. 3 spot in the singles lineup, she leads Northwestern with a 16-6 record in dual meet action, including a 9-2 mark against Big Ten opponents. She has four victories over ranked opponents to her credit this season. Her top win came against then-No. 43 Stephanie Nauta of Virginia. Niu and Turvy have teamed up to also notch a 13-4 record in doubles play.
Corning earned her first All-Big Ten distinction after going 11-9 in dual meet action while splitting time between the top two spots in the Wildcats' singles lineup. She notched a 5-6 record against conference opponents and handed then-No. 23 Whitney Kay of top-ranked North Carolina her first loss of the dual meet season. Corning has been ranked as high as No. 96 in the nation this season, including currently No. 123. In doubles play, she has teamed with freshman Alicia Barnett to win their last eight matches. The duo posted a 7-1 record against Big Ten foes.
Corning was also recognized as the team's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The student-athletes chosen to receive the honor are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Northwestern (15-8, 9-2 Big Ten) is No. 15 in this week's ITA team rankings heading into the Big Ten tournament. The Wildcats are the No. 3 seed for the tourney and open play against host and sixth-seeded Indiana in quarterfinal round action at 1 p.m. Central time Friday.
