EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the ninth time in the storied 10-year history of the tournament, Northwestern is among the field at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Feb. 22-24 at Big League Dreams in Cathedral City, Calif.
Formerly the Palm Springs Classic and the Cathedral City Classic, the tournament was re-named this year in honor of Mary Nutter, a softball pioneer and Michigan State graduate who passed away in 2012. This year, 13 of the nation's current USA Today/NFCA top-25 are in the field of 35 teams.
NU opens its Mary Nutter schedule at 12:30 p.m. CT/10:30 a.m. PT Friday, Feb. 22, against Georgia Tech before facing No. 4 Tennessee immediately after. On Saturday, the Wildcats play BYU at 2 p.m. CT/noon PT and Loyola Marymount at 7:30 p.m. CT/5:30 p.m. PT before a matchup with LIU Brooklyn at 11 a.m. CT/9 a.m. PT on Sunday.
Friday's games will be played at "Wrigley Field" while Saturday's contests will be held at the outlying Des Moines and Pawtucket parks. NU closes the tournament at "Yankee Field" on Sunday.
Northwestern has played in the Mary Nutter every year since 2004 with the exception of the 2006 season. In that time, the Wildcats have compiled a 22-18 record against the nation's best in the desert, including a 10-11 mark against ranked foes. Last year, NU topped then-No. 11 Missouri, 7-1, on getaway day.
NU is coming off a 3-1 weekend at the Georgia Softball Classic where the Wildcats batted .371 as a team, led by sophomore Andrea DiPrima's .667 (8-for-12) weekend. In the circle, Amy Letourneau went 2-0 with 27 strikeouts, first fanning a career-high 12 in a victory over Middle Tennessee State before upping that total to 15 in a win against Campbell. Senior Meghan Lamberth also had two good outings, allowing just one earned run in a complete game versus No. 13 Georgia and getting a win over MTSU.
ALLARD NAMED LOWE'S SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE
Earlier today, senior Emily Allard was named one of 30 candidates for the 2013 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, which honors senior student-athletes who excel both on and off the field.
Northwestern softball has a long history of success with this award, earning top-10 finalists in 2007 (Garland Cooper), 2009 (Tammy Williams) and 2010 (Nicole Pauly). In addition, 2012 senior Adrienne Monka was named a candidate for the honor. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence -- community, classroom, character and competition.
