EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern freshman Maggie Lyon (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) of the women's basketball team and junior Raleigh Smith (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) of the men's tennis team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Lyon tallied 16 points, four assists and three rebounds in Northwestern's 70-63 road win over Minnesota Sunday, converting on 7-of-10 field goal attempts to secure her eighth straight performance scoring in double figures. Lyon leads all Big Ten freshmen in points, steals per game and 3-point field goals, while ranking second in rebounds per game and third in assists.
Smith keyed a Wildcats victory over 43rd-ranked Middle Tennessee State Sunday, notching a 6-3, 6-4 win on the No. 2 singles line over MTSU's Victor Cornea as NU pulled out a 4-3 dual win. In the second match of NU's doubleheader, Smith moved up to the No. 1 singles position and coasted past Alexander Raa of Illinois-Chicago, 6-1, 6-1. Smith also was 2-0 in doubles play on the day alongside Sidarth Balaji, helping the Wildcats improve to 11-3 on the season.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is freshman Dwight White (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair) of the football team. Dwight was one of several Wildcats to visit Willard Elementary School last week to participate in the school's Jump Rope for Heart event, encouraging students to develop healthy, active lifestyles and incorporate exercise into their daily routines.
