Two Earn Championships at Wildcat Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern crowned two singles champions on Saturday during Day 2 of the Wildcat Invitational and advanced two doubles pairs to the championship round as well.
Veronica Corning squared off against teammate Alicia Barnett in one championship Saturday afternoon and came away with a 6-3, 6-4 decision. Manon Peri claimed the other title for the `Cats, defeating Kirsten Lewis of Kentucky 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Two other Wildcats claimed second place finishes over the weekend. Belinda Niu lost a hard-fought match to Alanna Wolff from Princeton 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Jillian Rooney was defeated by Marie Faure of Virginia in straight sets 6-5, 6-1.
Several players for Northwestern worked their way back through the consolation rounds throughout the day. Lok Sze Leung was in a back and forth match with Caryssa Peretz of Virginia, falling 5-6 before winning 6-5 and then 6-0 to claim the match. Both Brooke Rischbieth and Nida Hamilton won singles matches convincingly on Saturday. Rischbieth took down Katie Goepel from Princeton 6-0, 6-2, while Hamilton defeated Whitney Wofford of Oklahoma 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles play, the duo of Peri and Niu defeated teammate combo Maddie Lipp and Hamilton by a narrow 6-5 margin. Peri and Niu earned the right to face another pair of teammates as Corning and Rischbieth won in their semifinal match 6-2 over Aldila Sutjiadi and Kirsten Lewis of Kentucky.
That championship match and several others will be played on Sunday as the Wildcat Invitational reaches its final day.
