EVANSTON, Ill. Jillian Rooney and Maddie Lipp cruised through the first two rounds of the qualifying draw on Thursday at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Michigan. 

Rooney received a first-round bye before meeting Sydney Rider of Wisconsin in the second. She made quick work of Rider 6-0, 6-1. Lipp will also play Friday morning after beating Toledo's Katelyn Nguyen 6-3, 6-0 in the first round. Her second opponent, Ksenia Berestetska of Akron provided a tough matchup, but Lipp prevailed 6-2, 7-5.

The other Wildcat freshman in action Thursday morning was Brooke Rischbieth. She defeated Elaine Cloern from Wright State in the first round 6-2, 6-0. Rischbieth had a tough second match, falling to Eastern Michigan's Nino Mebuke 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4.

The Qualifying Singles Round of 16 will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday. Rooney and Lipp can both advance to the main draw with wins, as the top 8 qualify.

Friday afternoon marks the beginning of doubles play. Northwestern enters four doubles pairings for the event, but only one will play in the first round. Lok Sze Leung and Manon Peri square off against Nini Sujashvili and Kathleen Hawkins of Western Michigan at 2 p.m.

The veteran duo of Alicia Barnett and Veronica Corning receive a first round bye as do Belinda Niu and Rischbieth and the tandem of Nida Hamilton and Lipp.
