Northwestern Concludes Competition at Virginia Winter Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Northwestern's women's tennis team concluded its participation at the Virginia Winter Invitational on Monday when the 13th-ranked Wildcats took on No. 23 Tennessee.
Following stellar performances against No. 11 Virginia and No. 34 Utah over the previous two days, the 'Cats wrapped up the invite by posting three singles wins and one in doubles.
NU's doubles victory came at No. 3 where the duo of Alicia Barnett and Kate Turvy disposed of the team of Tiffany Tavares and Sarah Toti, 8-2.
The Wildcats' wins in singles came courtesy of Belinda Niu at No. 3 and Brittany Wowchuk at No. 4. Niu outlasted Caitlyn Williams in three sets, winning 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Wowchuk's win came in straight sets as she topped Joanna Henderson 6-4, 6-2. Veronica Corning was also a three-set winner, rallying back to defeat Tiffany Tavares, 0-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Despite falling to 23rd-ranked Brynn Boren 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Kate Turvy shared the weekend's singles championship with Boren and Virginia's Julia Elbaba. Turvy, who is ranked 67th, defeated the fourth-ranked Elbaba on Friday before defeating No. 72 Terez Bekerova of Utah on Saturday.
Northwestern opens its duel meet season at home this weekend as it welcomes Arkansas, Purdue and Washington State for the opening two rounds of the ITA Indoor Team Championships. The Wildcats take on Arkansas at 11 a.m. Friday while Purdue faces Washington State. The winners and losers of Friday's matches will square off on Saturday.
