EVANSTON, Ill. – First-year head coach Michael Moynihan and the Northwestern women's soccer team officially announced the schedule for the 2012 season today. The 'Cats' 19-game schedule includes an always-competitive Big Ten lineup, along with nine home matches at Lakeside Field.
"One of the reasons I came to Northwestern is the challenge that participating in the Big Ten presents,” Moynihan said. “Every weekend is a new opportunity and you have to be prepared. We have a competitive nonconference schedule and everyday our focus will be on taking small steps forward so we are ready. We have to be committed to improving. Both the players and the staff are excited to undertake the journey that will be our 2012 season. We are optimistic and we cannot wait to get started."
Fans have their first opportunity to check out the 2012 Wildcats on Saturday, August 11, when DePaul visits Lakeside Field for a preseason exhibition.
The 2012 season officially starts on the road as the 'Cats play their first three games away from home, beginning with the season-opener Sunday, August 19, at Kansas. The following weekend, Northwestern visits the state of Ohio to play at Miami in Oxford on Friday, August 24, and takes on Dayton on their home pitch Sunday, August 26.
Northwestern then settles in for five-straight matches at Lakeside Field beginning with the home opener on Friday, August 31 against Marquette. First-time opponent Colorado comes to town Sunday, September 2.
The month of September continues with another Friday/Sunday series when NU hosts in-state rival Northern Illinois on September 7 and Yale on September 9.
The five-game homestand concludes with the Big Ten opener as Nebraska makes its first trip to Lakeside Field as a member of the conference on Friday, September 14. That same weekend, the 'Cats wrap up the nonconference portion of their schedule at Oakland (Rochester, Mich.) on Sunday, September 16.
Penn State (Friday, September 21) and Ohio State (Sunday, September 23) play at Lakeside Field this year while NU visits Purdue (Friday, September 28) and Indiana (Sunday, September 30) to close out the month of September.
Northwestern hosts just two home games in October against Michigan (Saturday, October 6) and Iowa (Sunday, October 21). Road games at Wisconsin (Friday, October 12), Minnesota (Saturday, October 14), Illinois (Thursday, October 18) and the season finale at Michigan State (Saturday, October 27) wrap up the 2012 regular season schedule.
