EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern concludes its 2012 Big Ten season as it hosts Indiana for a three-game weekend series. Friday's series-opener at Rocky Miller Park gets underway at 3 p.m.
Saturday's matchup is slated for 1 p.m. first pitch, while Sunday's contest is being televised by Big Ten Network and starts at 2 p.m.
The conference season extends through next week, but the Wildcats have a bye in their league schedule and will host Saint Louis in a three-game set beginning on Thursday following a Tuesday home game with Notre Dame.
NU's pitching staff has allowed four runs or less in 12 of its Big Ten games this season and ranks fourth in the conference with a 3.94 ERA. In Big Ten play, Northwestern's staff ranks second with 130 batters struck out and third with a 3.53 ERA. The Wildcats are coming off a 6-4 loss to Milwaukee at Miller Park on Wednesday.
The Wildcats' record this season isn't far from being significantly better as 11 of their losses have been by a one-run margin.
Scouting Indiana
The Hoosiers (24-25, 11-7 Big Ten) enter the weekend in second place in the Big Ten, but just two games out of eighth place in the log-jammed league standings. Indiana took two of three games from Nebraska last weekend before falling 6-5 to seventh-ranked Kentucky in 12 innings on Wednesday. Freshman Sam Travis leads the team with a .335 batting average, 14 doubles eight homers and 44 RBI. LHP Joey DeNato paces the starting pitchers with a 7-2 record and a 2.37 ERA. Tracy Smith is in his seventh season as head coach.
Last Season: Indiana won two of the three games in Bloomington May 6-8. The Wildcats won 9-6 on Saturday, while the Hoosiers won 5-0 on Friday and 8-2 on Sunday.
