EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Kate Cavanaugh (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) of the women's fencing team and junior Drew Crawford (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) of the men's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Cavanaugh captured gold in the epee competition at the Midwest Fencing Championships Saturday in South Bend, Ind., becoming the first 'Cat to collect the top individual acclaim in the conference since 2010. Cavanaugh defeated Notre Dame's Ashley Severson, 15-10, to secure the medal, contributing to Northwestern's best team finish at the conference event since the 2007 campaign.
Crawford finished as Northwestern's leading scorer in two exciting games last week, beginning with his game-high 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting against ninth-ranked Ohio State on Wednesday. He followed that performance with 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals in 38 minutes of action in a 70-66 road win over Iowa, keeping alive NU's hopes for an NCAA Tournament berth.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is sophomore Kristin Wirtz (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park) of the field hockey team. Wirtz and several other student-athletes visited Park Elementary School last week to participate in the Read Across America event, held in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday. The Park School focuses on needs of students who have learning and/or physical disabilities.
