EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern makes its second trip to Florida in three weeks as it participates in the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte Friday through Sunday.
The Wildcats open play by squaring off against Western Michigan (1-5) at 2 p.m. Central time Friday. Saturday's action pits NU and Xavier (1-6) at 10 a.m. immediately followed by a matchup with Villanova (3-3). Northwestern finishes up the weekend by facing local foe Chicago State at 10 a.m.
The 'Cats are looking to bounce back from a trio of one-run defeats at Cal State Northridge last weekend. After dropping a 4-3 decision in Saturday's opener, NU rallied back from five runs down in the nightcap to take a lead before eventually falling 8-7 in 11 innings. The Wildcats trailed by six in Sunday's finale and closed to within one run before dropping another 8-7 decision.
Zach Morton, who sat out all of last season due to injury, is pacing Northwestern with a .429 batting average and a .538 on-base percentage so far this season. Sophomore Nick Linne is batting at a .400 clip. The Wildcats are batting .295 as a team through their first six contests, posting double-digit hits in five of the games.
Senior right-handers Francis Brooke and Michael Jahns have posted solid numbers on the mound for NU, mainly out of the bullpen. Jahns sports a 1.50 ERA through three appearances, while Brooke has a 2.08 ERA in three appearances as well.
