EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern redshirt freshman Mike McMullan (Easton, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) of the wrestling team and senior Jenny Wilson (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) of the women's swimming team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
McMullan became an NCAA All-American in his first trip to the national championships, placing seven spots above his seed to take third in the country at heavyweight. After suffering a loss to the eventual national champion Tony Nelson of Minnesota, McMullan went unbeaten in the wrestleback bracket, eventually defeating third-seeded Clayton Jack of Oregon State in the third-place match. McMullan was NU's highest-placing finisher to help the Wildcats place ninth nationally in the team standings.
Wilson broke a 12-year-old Northwestern school record in the 100-yard breaststroke during preliminary action Friday at the NCAA Championships before earning first-team All-America honors in the event with an eighth-place national finish in the `A' final Friday night. Swimming out of lane No. 7 in the fifth heat of six during the morning session, Wilson blazed to a time of 59.61 to earn the eighth spot in the championship final by two-hundredths of a second. Wilson then swam a 1:00.81 in the evening to place eighth overall.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is sophomore Meghan McKeown (Glencoe, Ill./Loyola Academy) of the women's basketball team. McKeown visited the Faith, Hope and Charity School to address the students about life as a Northwestern student-athlete. Later in the week, McKeown paid a visit to a local Girl Scout troop to discuss topics including the many roles women play in society, overcoming stereotypes, and how young girls can develop the courage and confidence to seek new roles and positions.
