DUNEDIN, Fla. -- A four-run sixth inning by Seton Hall was the difference as Northwestern dropped its final game of the Big Ten/Big East Challenge, 6-3, Sunday afternoon.
Senior catcher Geoff Rowan led the Wildcats with three hits while throwing out a pair of baserunners attempting to steal.
NU jumped on the board in the top of the first as Zach Morton drew a one-out walk and scored on a two-out double by Jack Havey.
The Pirates would even the score in the bottom of the second against Wildcat starter Francis Brooke as Kyle Grimm had an RBI single. Northwestern got the run right back in the top of the third as Luke Dauch led off the frame with a double and later scored on a groundout by Paul Snieder.
The Wildcats nearly added to their lead in the fourth as Nick Linne was at second with two away when Cody Stevens singled, but Linne was thrown out at the plate. Seton Hall made it 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth as Will Walsh tripled and scored on a single by Dale Anderson.
NU had a golden opportunity to surge back in front in the top of the sixth as it had two men in scoring position with one out, but Frank Morris got back-to-back strikeouts to hold the Wildcats at bay.
Dan Tyson relieved Brooke on the mound to start the home half of the sixth and the Pirates managed to push across four runs. Tyson retired the first batter of the inning before an error opened the door for Seton Hall as it strung together four straight hits.
The Wildcats got one run back in the ensuing half-inning on an RBI triple by Snieder, but NU was unable to make it all the way back.
Northwestern returns to action at 4 p.m. Central time Friday as it opens a four-game series at Cal State Northridge.
