EVANSTON, Ill. -- After fairing well against ranked opponents over the last two weeks, Northwestern made a push to enter the top-10 in the ITA's most recent rankings. The Wildcats currently sit at No. 9 in the nation, climbing three spots from No. 12. The last time the Wildcats were among the top-10 teams in the country was March 2, 2011 after upsetting No. 6 North Carolina the week before.
Juniors Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and Brittany Wowchuk (Toronto, Ont./Oakville Trafalgar) also benefited from facing tough competition recently. After posting a 4-3 mark against ranked opponents, Turvy vaulted from 26th nationally to No. 11. Wowchuk, who stands 5-2 on the season, took a giant leap from No. 86 to No. 45 in the newest rankings.
Though there has been some movement in the lineup in recent matches, as a doubles team Linda Abu Mushrefova (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) and Nida Hamilton (Oak Brook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) form the nation's sixth-best tandem, remaining in the to-10 since the 2012 preseason rankings.
As a team Northwestern stands at 5-3 this spring, with all eight opponents having been ranked in the top-60 in the country. The Wildcats have faced four opponents who were ranked ninth or better already this season, going 2-2 in those matches.
Next up, NU takes on yet another ranked foe as No. 16 Georgia Tech makes the trek from Atlanta, Ga., to Evanston at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24. The Wildcats are hosting High School Night, which will include free pizza for all fans.
