2012-13 Northwestern Wrestling Season Stats ![]()
EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 13 Northwestern is off to Philadelphia, Pa., this weekend where the Wildcats look to defend their title at the Keystone Classic. Last year, the 'Cats won the 11-team tournament, with twelve of their fourteen wrestlers placing in the top six. Levi Mele took first at 125 lbs. while Jameson Oster upset three seeded wrestlers to place third at 133 lbs.
The 2012 Keystone Classic features 14 teams this year, 10 of which competed in last year's tournament. The Pennsylvania Quakers will again host American, Appalachian State, Boston University, Brown, Duke, Harvard, Princeton, VMI, and Northwestern, along with newcomers Bloomsburg, Cal Poly, N.C. State, and Rider.
A total of 14 wrestlers currently ranked in InterMat's top-20 are scheduled to compete this weekend. Five of those wrestlers, including No. 10 Levi Mele (133), No. 3 Jason Welch (157), No. 14 Pierce Harger (165), No. 10 Lee Munster (174) and No. 5 Mike McMullan (285) come from the Northwestern squad.

141: Colin Shober / Pat Greco / Jameson Oster
149: Dylan Marriott / David Helmer

Homecoming
Sunday's trip to Philadelphia will be a homecoming of sorts for Mike McMullan and Colin Shober, who both hail from Pennsylvania. McMullan is from Easton, Pa., which is about 70 miles north of Philadelphia, while Shober's hometown of Reading, Pa., is about 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Northwestern will head back to Pennsylvania in a few weeks, wrestling at Edinboro, Pa., on Sunday, Dec. 16.
Last Time Out
Northwestern opened the 2012-13 campaign last Friday on the road at Stanford. Two-time All-American Jason Welch (157) kicked off his senior season with a win in front of his hometown crowd and the Wildcats' stellar sophomore class accounted for six victories as then-No. 14 Northwestern dropped Stanford, 32-6.
Northwestern dominated the action with wins in the first nine bouts of the night before Stanford evaded the shutout with a pin in the final match. It marks the second straight year Northwestern has topped Stanford in a season-opening dual.
