Turvy Claims Singles Title at ITA Midwest Regionals

URBANA, Ill. - Northwestern's women's tennis players have a history of success at the ITA Midwest Regionals and senior Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) added her name to that legacy on Tuesday.

Turvy became NU's 10th winner of the event in the last 14 years as she outlasted Notre Dame's Britney Sanders in the championship match, posting a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 win.

Turvy had advanced to the semifinal round each of the previous two seasons, but Tuesday marked her first appearance in the title match. Seeded first, she entered the preseason ranked No. 12 nationally. Sanders was seeded seventh in the field and ranked 98th in the nation by the ITA.

Turvy dropped just 13 games in her first four matches of the tournament. After winning a tight opening set, she bounced back from Sanders' 6-0 win in the second set by holding off the Fighting Irish junior in the third for the victory.

By virtue of the victory, Turvy earns an automatic bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, to be held Nov. 8-11 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
