Turvy Rolls Into ITA Midwest Regional Singles Title Match

URBANA, Ill. - Northwestern senior Kate Turvy earned a spot in the championship match of the singles draw by posting a pair of wins on Monday at the ITA Midwest Regionals hosted by the University of Illinois.

Turvy, the No. 2 seed, had little trouble with 11th-seeded Patricia Fargas of DePaul in the quarterfinal round, rolling to a 6-1, 6-3 victory.

The win earned Turvy a matchup with sixth-seeded Allison Falkin of Illinois and Turvy steam-rolled her way to a 6-0, 6-0 victory to earn a berth in Tuesday's title match against Notre Dame's Britney Sanders, the No. 7 seed.

It is the third straight year that Turvy reached the tournament's semifinal round, but Tuesday marks her first appearance in the championship match. She will aim to be Northwestern's 10th regional champion in the last 14 years.

Sanders was able to get by Northwestern junior Belinda Niu in the other semifinal, winning 6-3, 6-4. Sanders advanced to the matchup with Niu thanks to a three-set upset win over top-seeded Emina Bektas of Michigan in her quarterfinal match.

Niu, who was seeded ninth, made it to the semis thanks to a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory over eighth-seeded Jasmin Kling of DePaul earlier in the day.

Tuesday's championship match between Turvy and Sanders is slated for 10 a.m. The victor earns an automatic bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, to be held Nov. 8-11 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
