EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Dannielle Diamant (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) of the women's basketball team and junior Charlie Rimkus (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) of the men's swimming team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Diamant put up back-to-back double-doubles for the Wildcats last week beginning with her 21-point, 10-rebound effort against Big Ten-leading Purdue on Thursday, adding two blocks to round out her stat line. On Sunday, Diamant spearheaded a 68-61 victory over Indiana with 22 points and 11 boards as the Wildcats completed the season sweep of the Hoosiers. With Northwestern protecting a three-point lead and 15 seconds to play, Diamant stepped to the line and calmly sank two free throws to ice the win in front of a raucous home crowd at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Rimkus keyed Northwestern's 188-180 double-dual victory over 25th-ranked Missouri and 212-156 win over Denver on Saturday. In the 400 IM, Rimkus came from behind following the final turn to overtake Denver's Tyler Pennington by .31 of a second. Later, Rimkus posted a season-best 1,650 free time of 15:40.40 to nab first by nearly six seconds and pull the Wildcats to within one point of Missouri. But he saved his best for last, erasing a .81-second deficit in the final 50 yards to win the 200 fly by .04, keeping NU in contention for the dual win and setting the stage for a dramatic Wildcats victory.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is freshman Eric Weberman (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) of the men's soccer team. Weberman and the rest of the men's soccer program collaborated with Dance Marathon and Be Positive on an AYSO soccer clinic on Jan. 29. The clinic was aimed at raising awareness for Be Positive, which provides financial and emotional support to families of children fighting cancer as well as childhood cancer research grants. Be Positive is this year's Dance Marathon beneficiary.
