EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) was named the Big Ten's Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Playing at No. 1 singles, No. 26 Turvy knocked off No. 23 Jackie Wu of Vanderbilt (6-2, 6-4), helping the 12th-ranked Wildcats to a 5-2 win over the 15th-ranked Commodores. Earlier, the junior teamed with sophomore Belinda Niu (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) to defeat VU's Nelly Radeva and Lauren Mira (8-6) in doubles play. That victory secured the doubles point for NU.
This marks the first time in her career being honored by the conference for the weekly award. During the fall slate, Linda Abu Mushrefova (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) garnered Women's Tennis Athelte of the Week honors on Oct. 6. The last Northwestern weekly award during the spring season went to Maria Mosolova (April 12, 2011).
Turvy was also named to the CollegeSports360.com Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll on Tuesday for her outstanding effort against the Commodores.
