EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern student-athletes recorded their 16th-consecutive academic quarter with a cumulative GPA above a 3.00 after combining for a 3.16 in the fall of 2011. That GPA falls among the top six quarterly totals over the last 10 years for the Wildcats.
Highlighting the achievements of the fall of 2011 were 16 out of 19 teams earning a GPA of 3.00 or higher, with the top team GPAs coming from women's cross country and field hockey, which both tied for first at 3.41. Northwestern women's tennis compiled a 3.40 GPA while women's swimming and men's tennis tied at 3.38 overall.
"Beyond striving to win championships on the field of play, our student-athletes also realize the importance of giving their best efforts in the classroom each and every day," Director of Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips said. "We continue to be exceptionally proud of their performance both on and off the field."
In addition, Northwestern broke its program record for single-sport season Academic All-Big Ten honors for the fifth-straight year with 97 in the fall of 2011, easily topping the previous mark of 90 established in the fall of 2010.
