EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Audrey Huth (Shelby, Mich./Utica) of the cross country team and freshman Tyler Miller (Woodbury, N.J./Bishop Eustace) of the men's soccer team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Huth was the co-recipient of the inaugural Big Ten Runner of the Week honor for the 2011 season after taking first place in the 5K Crusader Open at Valparaiso, helping the Wildcats also claim first in the meet's team standings. Huth turned in a 5K time of 17:56 to start off the season, making her the only runner in a field of more than 80 competitors to run sub-18 minutes. She is the first NU runner to win the weekly conference laurel since 2001.
Miller posted a shutout in Northwestern's tie of seventh-ranked California last week at Toyota Park, playing all 110 minutes in his collegiate debut while making two saves. He followed that effort with yet another shutout on Labor Day, this time in a 2-0 Northwestern victory over UMKC in which he need to make just one stop to blank the Kangaroos.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is junior Demetrius Fields (Dallas, Texas/South Oak Cliff) of the football team. Fields and several other members of the football program are visiting local schools this week in the lead-up to Evanston Day at Ryan Field on Saturday. Fields will spend time reading to the students to teach them the joys of reading and also answer questions about life as an NU student-athlete.
