EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Chelsea Armstrong (Perth, Australia/Penrhos) of the field hockey team and sophomore Chris Ritter (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) of the men's soccer team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Armstrong enjoyed a record-setting day on Sunday, becoming the all-time leading scorer in Northwestern field hockey history by netting a hat trick in NU's come-from-behind 5-3 win over No. 18 Virginia at Lakeside Field. That performance came on the heels of another stellar game on Friday in which Armstrong notched two goals and an assist to help NU top 11th-ranked California, 3-1. She now has 145 career points (3.02 ppg) and needs just one more goal to also become the 'Cats all-time leader in goals scored.
Ritter was named the MVP of the Lakeside Classic after scoring a pair of goals over the weekend and leading Northwestern to a pair of shutout wins. In Friday's 1-0 victory over UC Davis, Ritter tallied the match's lone goal in the 13th minute of play. Against previously undefeated Xavier on Sunday, Ritter scored a first-half goal on a penalty kick to help lead the Wildcats to a 2-0 win. The win over the Musketeers came two days after they had handed 13th-ranked Northern Illinois its first loss of the season.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is junior Julie Chin (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) of the volleyball team. Chin and her teammates hosted more than 80 girls in the 'Cats Clinic, teaching fundamental volleyball skills to all participants. Afterward, the Wildcats stuck around for an autograph and photo session with the youngsters.
