LINCOLN, Neb. -- Morgan Marlborough scored a hat trick as Nebraska beat Northwestern, 3-1, at Nebraska Soccer Field Sunday. The match was the first-ever Big Ten Conference match for Nebraska in any sport.
The Husker junior opened the scoring in the 15th minute, then added a second goal just minutes later. Marlborough took seven of Nebraska's 17 shots in the match.
Northwestern cut the deficit to one in the 60th minute after Briana Westlund (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) converted a penalty kick. The junior is now 2-2 on penalty kick opportunities in her career. But Marlborough added her third goal in the 77th minute to finish off the scoring.
The Wildcats put six shots on goal in the contest - including three from senior Jill Dunn (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley), but were unable to convert against Nebraska goalkeeper Emma Stevens, who finished with five saves.
Anna Cassell (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) made three saves for the 'Cats.
Northwestern continues its Big Ten conference road swing next weekend with a Friday match at Penn State. The game will stream live as part of the Big Ten Digital Network on Wildcats All-Access.
