2011 Northwestern Cross Country Schedule
EVANSTON, Ill. -- After completing a rigorous spring track schedule, Northwestern head coach April Likhite has announced an equally challenging schedule of competitions for the 2011 cross country season, which gets underway Friday, Sept. 2 at the Crusader Open hosted by Valparaiso.
A week later, NU will remain in Illinois for the Huskie Open in DeKalb before venturing for the third consecutive season to the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational hosted by Minnesota on Sept. 30.
Trips to competitions at Notre Dame and Wisconsin on Sept. 30 and Oct. 14, respectively, will then give Northwestern two chances to test itself against many of the top teams in the Midwest.
On Oct. 21, NU will get a preview of the Big Ten Championships host course when it runs the Illini Open in Champaign, Ill., returning just a week later to compete in the conference meet hosted by Illinois.
Championship season will continue on Nov. 12 with the NCAA Midwest Regionals, which this year will take place just 70 miles from Evanston on the campus of Northern Illinois. A year ago, NU placed 11th at the Regional meet, its best showing in the team standings since 2003.
Indiana State once again will play host to the NCAA Championships on Monday, Nov. 21.
Likhite, now entering her eighth overall season at the helm for NU, guided the Wildcats to one of their most successful campaigns in recent history in 2010. Northwestern took first place in the team standings in four meets and saw Audrey Huth become the first Wildcat to qualify for the NCAA Championships since 2002.
Huth will be back as a junior in 2011 along with 20 other returning letterwinners, providing Likhite a wealth of experience to begin the year.
