EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern to Benefit Special Olympics, the largest and oldest Special Olympics collegiate chapter in the country, held its first-ever Young Athletes Program on Saturday. The field day was designed to introduce children who are too young to formally compete, those ages 2 to 7, to the values of the Special Olympics.
In the morning, the Young Athletes participated in their culminating events for the year and received certificates of completion from Northwestern to Benefit Special Olympics. After lunch, Nearly 100 NU student-athletes spent the rest of the day working with the children, helping to teach skills which included kicking, hitting, running and other various fundamentals. Kids were able to show off what they had learned throughout the year by circulating through multiple skill stations set up on Lakeside Field.
"Being able to put a smile on the faces of those children made this event worthwhile for me," said NU freshman softball player Marisa Bast. "I had so much fun getting to teach them a little about softball and working with all the other student-athletes. It feels great to give back to the community and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of such an event."
