NU Announces Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat junior Shannon Smith (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) of the women's lacrosse team and senior Chris Lashmet (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) of the baseball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Smith scored five goals in each of Northwestern's games at the American Lacrosse Conference Championship at Vanderbilt, sparking the Wildcats' offense to a 10-9 comeback win over top-seeded Florida in the title game Saturday. Smith, who also added three assists over the weekend, scored consecutive unassisted goals with NU trailing, 8-5, late in the second half against the Gators. Named the MVP of the tournament, Smith now sits seventh all-time at NU with 246 points and ninth with 170 career goals.
Lashmet led Northwestern to a 9-6 road win at Indiana on Saturday with his four-hit, two-home run performance at the plate. The senior third baseman also scored three runs in the game. Lashmet finished with six hits in the series and is currently leading the team in batting average (.366), hits (60) and total bases (84).
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is Annelise Eeman (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) of the fencing team. Annelise visited Edison Elementary School in Skokie last week to engage the students in various athletics skill sessions and encourage healthy lifestyles and commitment to academics.
