Stanford, Calif. -- After a weather delay of over two hours at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Center on Wednesday, the NCAA Singles Championships got underway for Northwestern's four-time All-American Maria Mosolova. She and Miami (Fla.)'s Anna Bartenstein squared off for the first time ever in their first-round matchup. Mosolova held firm and came away with an impressive three-set victory, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
"Maria played great tennis today," head coach Claire Pollard said. "Anna (Bartenstein) stepped up her game in the second set, but Maria just stayed focused and pulled through with a great third. It was a great way to start the tournament."
Mosolova cruised to a 6-3 first set on Court 9 at the Taube Tennis Stadium, but Bartenstein gave her some trouble in the second set. The junior Hurricane bounced back, winning the first three games en route to taking the middle set, 6-3. But Mosolova rebounded herself jumping out to a 4-1 advantage, breaking serve and forcing a few errors along the way to a 6-2 final set win.
Mosolova's win set her up for a morning matchup with South Florida's 35th-ranked Irene Rehberger at 3 p.m. CT. Also on Thursday will be the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship where NU's Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton are set to face Maryland's Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Jordaan Sanford at 8 p.m. CT.
