EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern juniors Paul Snieder (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) and Stacey Lee (Old Westbury, N.Y./Wheatley) have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Snieder guided Northwestern to a perfect 4-0 week, hitting safely in all four games including notching three multi-hit contests. He hit .588 on the week with a .812 slugging percentage, boosted by his seventh-inning grand slam vs. Michigan on Friday afternoon. Snieder, who earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors for his efforts, also picked up his team-leading fifth save of the season by working the final 3 2/3 innings of NU's 11-6 win over the Wolverines on Saturday.
Lee was 2-0 in singles matches during Northwestern's wins in the early rounds of the NCAA Championship, beginning with her 6-0, 6-0 blanking of IPFW's Alexandra Forsyth on Friday. The next day, Lee took on Notre Dame's Britney Sanders at No. 5 singles and, after taking the first set 6-3, overpowered Sanders in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-1, to clinch a Wildcat victory. It was the second time this season NU defeated regional rival Notre Dame. Lee is 15-8 in her junior campaign entering Northwestern's showdown with top-seeded Stanford Friday evening.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is freshman JerShon Cobb (Decatur, Ga./Columbia) of the men's basketball team. On Thursday, Cobb spent time with students at The Cove School in Northbrook, a K-12 school for children coping with a range of learning disabilities. On Monday, Cobb spoke with and played basketball with a tour group of 85 students from Hoffman Estates.
