EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcats senior Maria Mosolova has been named Big Ten Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading Northwestern to back-to-back conference victories over the weekend. The senior went undefeated in two singles matches and two doubles matches as the Wildcats jumped out to a 4-0 start in Big Ten play.
Mosolova competed with freshman Belinda Niu at No. 2 doubles against Ohio State on Friday, blanking the Buckeyes' Kara Cecil and Noelle Malley, 8-0. The senior, ranked 16th in the nation in singles, then topped Kelsey Haviland, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles to push the 'Cats to a convincing 5-2 road win.
Northwestern then travelled to University Park to take on the Nittany Lions of Penn State, where Mosolova and Niu quickly picked up their second win of the weekend at No. 2 doubles, taking down Marie Bedard and Fernanda Perrotta, 8-4. Mosolova then cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Petra Januskova at No. 1 singles, improving to 12-0 on the year in dual action.
Northwestern stands 11-5 overall and is tied atop the Big Ten standings with their undefeated start to conference play.
This is the eighth time Mosolova has claimed the Athelete of the Week award in her time at NU, and the singles victories push the senior's career record to 29-1 in Big Ten dual matches.
Northwestern is riding a six-match winning streak heading into its showdown with No. 20 Notre Dame on Thursday. The Fighting Irish will travel to Evanston to take on the Wildcats with start time set for 3 p.m. Stay tuned to NUsports.com for a final decision on whether the match will be played indoors (Combe Tennis Center) or outside (Vandy Christie Tennis Center).
