NU Announces Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern sophomores Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadow) of the women's golf team and Luke Farrell (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) of the baseball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Weaver led Northwestern's impressive effort at the 2011 Big Ten Championships on NU's home course, finishing second on the individual leaderboard with a 2-over 288 for the tournament. Her low round for the weekend came on Saturday when she fired a 3-under 69. Weaver and her teammates combined to shoot a 35-over 1,187 -- the best Big Ten Championships score in Northwestern history -- and finish in third place in the team standings.
Farrell was tabbed the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week after hurling eight shutout innings Saturday against Purdue, which came into the contest ranked first in the conference in virtually every offensive category. Farrell scattered six hits and struck out seven -- one shy of his career high -- in his eight innings of work. Farrell leads NU with a 4-1 record and a 3.25 ERA and ranks third in the Big Ten with 24 K's in conference play.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Ricky Weina (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove) of the football team. Weina visited Willard Elementary School in Evanston to engage with the students during their "TV Tune Out Week," which encourages kids to reduce or eliminate time spent in front of TVs, computers and any other device with a screen. Weina played group games like bingo and with the students and led them in various other activities.
