EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern sophomore right-hander Luke Farrell (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) has been selected as the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week the conference office announced Monday. He earns the award based on his performance in a win over Purdue last Saturday.

It is the first such honor of Farrell's career.

The Boilermakers entered the contest ranked first in the Big Ten in virtually every offensive category, but Farrell was undaunted. Backed by his offense in the Wildcats' 14-1 win, he held Purdue's high-powered offense scoreless over his eight innings of work. Farrell scattered six hits and finished with seven strikeouts, one shy of his career high.

He leads Northwestern with a 4-1 record and paces all starters with a 3.25 ERA. Farrell ranks fifth in the Big Ten with 48 strikeouts and third with 24 K's in conference play.

Northwestern (13-23, 5-7 Big Ten) returns to action at 3 p.m. Tuesday as it hosts St. Xavier at Rocky Miller Park.
