EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Maria Mosolova earned her second straight Big Ten Player of the Week honors on Tuesday after winning three singles and two doubles matches over the weekend. Mosolova opened the weekend with a thrilling three-set, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, win over Notre Dame's third-ranked Kristy Frilling on Thursday. The win sparked a come-from-behind victory for the 'Cats over the No. 20 Irish, 4-3.
NU then went on to beat Iowa, 6-1, as Mosolova teamed up with Belinda Niu to defeat the Hawkeyes' Alexis Dorr and Christina Harazin, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles and picked up a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) win over No. 101 Sonja Molnar at No. 1 singles.
Mosolova then helped the 'Cats outlast Illinois as she and Niu earned an 8-4 win over the Illini's Amy Allin and Leigh Finnegan at No. 2 doubles. She then defeated Allin, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 1 singles as Northwestern put away Illinois, 5-2.
The 'Cats currently hold a 14-5 overall record and are tied with Michigan atop the Big Ten standings with their 6-0 record in conference play.
This is the ninth time Mosolova has earned the Athlete of the Week award while at Northwestern, and the singles victories push the senior's career record to 31-1 in Big Ten dual matches.
