Jaeschke First Wildcat To Be Drafted In WNBA

BRISTOL, Conn. -- Amy Jaeschke was selected as the 27th pick in the 2011 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky, it was announced today (April 11). The Wilmette, Ill., native was chosen in the third round as the Sky's fourth pick and becomes the first Wildcat to be drafted in the WNBA.
"It's great to be drafted," Jaeschke said. "It means so much to me, and I couldn't have done it without my coaches, teammates, parents, friends and family. I'm so glad to have the opportunity to stay in Chicago and try out. I think it speaks to players looking to come to Northwestern, because it shows that you can play here [Northwestern] and go on to the next level. It really shows how far this program has come."
"I think it's a great honor for Amy to be the first player from Northwestern to be drafted in the WNBA," Northwestern Head Coach Joe McKeown said. "And, to be taken by your hometown team makes it even more special. I'm really excited for Amy and her family that she has an opportunity to play in the WNBA. I think Pokey Chatman and the Sky will be really impressed with her skill set when they get her into training camp."
Jaeschke has enjoyed an exceptional career in Evanston, where she cemented herself as one of NU's all-time greats. The Wilmette, Ill., native is second in both scoring and rebounding in Northwestern history and tops NU's career blocks chart. She also is tied for 19th all-time in NCAA Division I history with 357 rejections. Jaeschke has garnered national attention all season, being named to the State Farm Wade Trophy and Naismith Trophy Preseason Watch Lists as well as drawing recognition as a Lowe's Senior Class Award candidate and a Wooden Award finalist.
Most recently, Jaeschke became just the fifth Wildcat -- and the first since 1998 -- to earn All-America honors, garnering honorable mention Associated Press accolades.
The senior, who earned WBCA All-District accolades a few weeks ago, turned in an outstanding final year, averaging 21.4 ppg, 9.0 rpg, and 3.3 bpg. She finished her career with 1,976 points, 933 rebounds, 357 blocks while shooting 45.5 percent from the field. Jaeschke also led Northwestern to back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time since 1995.
