EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern junior Stacey Lee has been named the Big Ten Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the second time this month the award has gone to an NU player. Lee claimed a dramatic three-set win at No. 4 singles on Saturday, defeating 93rd-ranked Lauren McHale to clinch the Wildcats upset of third-ranked North Carolina.
It is Lee's first time receiving the Big Ten Player of the Week honor.
Lee and McHale squared off for the second time in a week after NU and North Carolina had met previously on Feb. 19 at the ITA National Indoor Team Championship. McHale took that initial meeting in two sets and won the first set by a 6-1 score on Saturday, but Lee found her stride after that.
The junior, who is now 51-18 in her singles career at Northwestern, took the next two sets off McHale by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 to account for the clinching fourth point. It was just the fourth time in her career that Lee played as high as the No. 4 singles line in a dual match.
The win over the Tar Heels was the second over a top-5 team for the Wildcats in a span of only eight days.
Lee and ninth-ranked Northwestern remain at home this weekend to face No. 24 Texas at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Combe Tennis Center. Admission to the match is free for all fans.
