Big Ten Tabs Brittany Wowchuk as Player of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- After a stellar weekend of play during which she topped three highly ranked singles and doubles opponents -- including No. 4 Reka Zsilinszka of Duke -- Northwestern sophomore Brittany Wowchuk was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Tuesday.
It marks the first time Wowchuk has claimed the weekly conference honor as she becomes NU's first recipient since March 30 of last season when Maria Mosolova took home the award.
Wowchuk's weekend began Saturday with an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles over Minnesota's 84th-ranked tandem of Alessandra Ferrazzi and Alexa Palen, which she followed up with a swift 6-1, 6-3 defeat of the senior Ferrazzi at No. 2 singles.
The competition escalated on Sunday as Northwestern faced sixth-ranked Duke, which began auspiciously for the Wildcats as they swept doubles play. Included in that sweep was an 8-4 doubles-clinching win by Wowchuk and Elena Chernyakova over the 39th-ranked team of Monica Gorny and Mary Clayton.
In singles, Wowchuk spent over two and a half hours battling fourth-ranked Zsilinszka, eventually holding off the two-time All-American in a three-set match, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Wowchuk is now 15-5 overall in 2010-11 with a 5-1 mark in No. 2 dual singles matches.
Northwestern's season continues at 6 p.m. Friday when NU hosts Kentucky at the Combe Tennis Center.
