EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat seniors Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) of the women's basketball team and Michael Thompson (Chicago, Ill./Lincoln Park) of the men's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Jaeschke turned in two monster performances to lead NU to a pair of Big Ten wins, hitting the game-winning shot with 1.4 seconds left against Illinois Thursday evening and pouring in 29 points in a triumph at Ohio State Sunday. The senior averaged 25.5 points and seven rebounds per contest and was a combined 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. In both games, Jaeschke battled with the best in the Big Ten, taking on the Illini's Karisma Penn and OSU's three-time Big Ten Player of the Year Jantel Lavender. NU swept the season series against both squads, the first time it has done so against Illinois since 1996.
Thompson scored a game-high 22 points while playing all 40 minutes Saturday in leading Northwestern to an emotional 71-70 win over 24th-ranked and arch rival Illinois. The senior guard came up huge down the stretch for the Wildcats, hitting four second-half 3-pointers, including a trio over a four-minute span late in the contest with the Illini threatening. Thompson's performance gave the Wildcats their first win over a ranked opponent this season in the program's first home game ever to be televised by CBS.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is sophomore Levi Mele (Vernal, Utah/Uintah) of the wrestling team. During the monstrous snowstorm that hit the Chicagoland area last week, Mele signed up with the City of Evanston to help shovel snow and dig out cars in the community for the elderly or other individuals who needed assistance.
