LUBBOCK, Texas -- Five Northwestern errors led to three unearned runs by Texas Tech as the Wildcats fell to the host Red Raiders 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Red Raider Classic.
NU pitchers also hurt their own cause by hitting three batters and issuing six walks.
The Wildcats jumped on the hosts right out of the gates, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. Trevor Stevens started the game with a single and advanced to second on a balk by Robbie Kilcrease. Chris Lashmet later came through with a clutch two-out RBI double to plate Stevens from third.
However, that would be all the offense that Northwestern would muster. Texas Tech benefited from two walks, a hit batter and an error in tying the game in the bottom of the first.
Another error to begin the second inning opened the door for the Red Raiders to get two more runs off Jack Havey to take the lead. Texas Tech would go on to post single tallies in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to pad their lead.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats were only able to muster two hits after the opening inning of play. Lashmet had two of the team's four hits in the contest.
Havey suffered the loss on the mound, allowing five hits and five runs (three earned) over five innings of work. Ethan Bramschreiber surrendered one run in two innings, while Jack Livingston pitched a scoreless eighth.
Northwestern wraps up play at the Red Raider Classic on Sunday as it faces Texas Tech in a rematch. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
