NU Announces Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat sophomore Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) of the women's golf team and junior Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) of the men's golf team team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Playing in the 2011 Lady Puerto Rico, Weaver saved her best performance for last on Tuesday, recording a 1-under 71 over the final 18 holes to move up from seventh and finish tied for fourth in the individual standings with a 2-over 218. Weaver's effort, which helped Northwestern tie for sixth place overall, included birdies on holes eight and 11 and pars on 15 of her remaining 16 holes. Weaver has now notched a top-10 finish in four of Northwestern's six events.
Chun was one of four Wildcats to win his match in the championship of the Big Ten Match Play title Saturday afternoon, completing an undefeated weekend for the junior and moving his career record at the tourney to a near-perfect 10-0-1. Friday against Illinois, with the entire team match heading to a total holes tiebreaker, Chun's 4-up advantage on Illinois' Luke Guthrie was huge as the junior went dormie on No. 15. Chun hit the green on the difficult par-3 15th and went on to take his match by a huge 5 and 3 margin as the 'Cats edged the Illini for a berth in the final. On Saturday, Chun protected a 1-up lead through 15 to hold off Indiana's Chase Wright as NU celebrated its second conference match play title in as many seasons.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is junior Maria Tedeschi (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) of the women's lacrosse team. Tedeschi has made several recent visits to the Orrington Elementary School to assist physical education classes, leading drills and games to spread their enthusiasm and knowledge of sports with the youngsters.
