EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head coach April Likhite announced Monday two new additions to the Wildcats cross country program for the fall of 2011, Maddie Elkins (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) and Elizabeth Fierro (Northport, N.Y./Northport).

Both Elkins and Fierro were three-sport letterwinners and captains in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, each earning all-state honors during their high school careers.

"I am thrilled to have Maddie and Elizabeth join our Northwestern family next fall. Both have the character and drive that we want in our student-athletes and both will be competitive within our championship squad," Likhite said. "Coming from a very small high school distance program, Maddie will greatly benefit from the push her teammates can provide on a daily basis. Meanwhile, the team success Elizabeth has achieved, particularly in the 4x800-meter relay, will only enhance the culture of the Northwestern Cross Country program."

Elkins and Fierro add further depth to a Northwestern squad that loses only two of its 23 runners from 2010 to graduation. Led by 2010 NCAA Championships qualifier Audrey Huth, last year's edition of the Wildcats notched its best finish at the Midwest Regional event since 2003 when they took 11th.
