EVANSTON, IL -- Freshman Morgan Jones recorded 18 points but it was not enough as a late Toledo run proved to be the dagger in the Rockets' 75-56 win at Welsh-Ryan Arena Tuesday evening. Kendall Hackney joined Jones in double figures as Northwestern drops to 10-3 on the year.
The two teams found themselves deadlocked at 16 midway through the first half until an Allison Mocchi three-pointer pushed NU ahead 19-16. The half continued in that neck-and-neck manner until Toledo pulled ahead by four, 29-25, at the break.
Morgan Jones led NU with eight points while Hackney added six. Toledo dominated down low and capitalized on second-chance shots, pulling 12 points from 11 offensive rebounds.
Toledo opened the second half on a 9-2 run to extend its lead to 38-27 just three minutes in. But the Wildcats caught fire, scoring on the next three possessions while crafting an 8-2 run to pull within 42-37 with 13:22 remaining.
The Rockets scooted ahead, but four minutes later, a three-point play by Tailor Jones once again made it a two-possession game, 47-41. Jones continued to be NU's spark over the next few minutes, driving the Wildcats to within four, 53-49, on a steal and lay-in with 6:16 remaining.
But it seemed like everything was going the Rockets' way, as they proceeded to drain three consecutive three pointers and go on a 12-2 run to inflate the lead to 17 with three minutes remaining.
Northwestern suffered just its third loss of the season and wrapped up the preseason with a 10-3 mark.
With the nonconference complete, Northwestern now turns its attention to Big Ten play, traveling to Iowa for a 6 p.m. contest Friday, Dec. 30.
