TEMPE, Ariz. -- Northwestern's women's tennis team wrapped up a prosperous fall campaign on Sunday at the final day of the 17th annual Thunderbird Invitational, hosted by Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz.
Only two Wildcats were in action on the final day of the tournament. Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) teamed with Brittany Wowchuk (Toronto, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) in doubles for a match against Cal's Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting. The 'Cats fell in a close match, 8-5, on the tournament's final day.
Wowchuk, seeded No. 5-8 in the draw, played a consolation match against Utah's Anastasia Putilina. Putilina won the match, 6-2, 7-6 (2).
Freshman Anna Livadaru (Berlin, Germany/Boca Prep) and sophomore Belinda Niu (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) also played in the Thunderbird Invitational for Northwestern. Another pair of Wildcats, Linda Abu Mushrefova (Bradenton, Fla./Pendelton) and Nida Hamilton (Oak Brook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) concluded the fall season at the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships this weekend in New York City. The duo made it all the way to the semifinals before being defeated by a team from USC, which eventually went on to claim the title.
Northwestern will begin its quest for a 14th consecutive Big Ten regular season championship on Jan. 13 - 15 when it hosts the Wildcat Invitational at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion in Evanston, Ill.
